What's with the money?
Ever wonder the story behind your money or what each symbol means or why it's a certain color. I honestly have to say, I have never really thought much about it until one day in class...
Here are some interesting facts, I learned about the Costa Rican Colones.
Look closely and you will see that on the front of every colon a number and then that number in brail, in the middle of the coin (I thought this fact was rather awesome) On the back of the coin you can see the Costa Rican Coat of Arms. Seven stars represent the seven provinces in Costa Rica. The three Mountain Ranges represent the three mountain ranges and major Volcanoes. In front and behind the mountain there is water which represents the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. There is a ship in both seas which represent when the history of the conquistadors. And in the horizon the rising sun. Coffee is represented by the frame of the seal.
Now let´s take a look at the bills.
Each Bill is a different color and a significant person on each bill, along with a unique design.
Red-is for the blood that was shed during war, tree of Guanacaste, the deer represents wildlife on the land and it also has a coffee leaf on the bill.
Blue-is for the oceans and the wildlife in the ocean.
Yellow is for the sun-It has the white faced monkey and a crab
Green- The rain forest, the sloth and plants in the area
Orange- the only bill with a woman on it,Carmen Lyra- the first prominent Costa Rican Writer and was a teacher and founded the first Montessori school- the wildlife: coyote, rabbits, hummingbird, and a flower.
Purple-beauty and peace( if I remember right from class), wildlife: butterfly
Also another interesting fact is that Costa Rica does not have an army.
Ever wonder the meaning of your money? Why no find out?
