Fun lessons to learn in Costa Rica
Lesson #1- Be Prepared to Be WET
Always, Always bring your umbrella with you, especially during rainy season. You never know when it just might pour! This is a lesson I am still learning, as I tend to forget my umbrella much of the time and I end up getting wet. However, even with an umbrella and poncho you'll get soaked!
Lesson #2- The Bus
The bus is by far the cheapest way to get around and it's rather easy. Make sure you have change, wait for the person in front of you to pay before you step in the bus, unless the driver tells you otherwise, always hold your things in front of you, and it's not wise to play on your phone, keep it hidden as much as possible. Don't take the bus at night, get an über instead. There are several bus stations around where you can buy tickets for a trip to the beach or other locations, prices are reasonable. If you don't have a car, this is the way to go.
Lesson #3 - Taxis
If you have to take a taxi always ask for an estimate and bargain, if you don't like the price, just walk away, there are a lot of taxis around and you are bound to find one who will take you where you want for a good price.
Lesson #4- Über
The über app is a must! In my opinion, it is the best way to get around when you don't want to take a bus, great prices, records of your travels and tends to be cheaper. I feel safe in an über. Just for you knowledge Taxi's and Übers don't get a long very well.
Lesson #5- Don't be afraid to speak
Talk, talk and talk in Spanish, with your neighbour, people at the park, at church, your landlord, host family, über driver/taxi driver, or even yourself. The more you talk in Spanish, the more encouraged you will be. You will make mistakes, people will laugh, and people will correct you gently. Don't be afraid of making mistakes, you won't get better unless you try, and always have a good attitude and learn to laugh at yourself.
